Powders rooms are usually the smallest room in a home, but boy, can they be mighty. More and more homeowners are using powder rooms as their excuse to be bold and we are absolutely loving this trend! During the research phase of your project, we anticipate many questions arising. Most glaringly, how much is this piece of the home going to cost?
Below are some guidelines that Ai STUDiO uses to evaluate design needs and budget in these magnificent spaces.
The first step to any design is gaining a complete understanding of the space and it’s functional needs. Powder rooms are traditionally half-baths meant to be used solely by visitors and guests. Therefore, creating a luxurious experience for your guests is paramount. How everything fits into the smaller area can be a challenge, but any experienced designer or contractor will have solutions.
If your powder room is cramped, you can create the illusion of space by freeing up the floor area. Choosing a wall-hung sink and toilet can open up the room, but may be a larger expense than more traditional fixtures.
Cabinetry prices can range anywhere from $100-$1,500 and up per linear foot depending on customization vs. factory-built. Plumbing fixture packages can range from $1,000-$6,500 or more. It’s important to keep all of this in mind in order to prioritize your spend effectively
If your space is larger, you may have more flexibility with fixtures and storage, however, more square footage will require more materials.
A large part of any budget goes to the materials themselves. Choosing one material vs. another material can mean a world’s difference in budget. For example, hardwood floors sanded on-site range from $3.00-$12.00 and up per square foot, while decorative tile starts at $15.00 per square foot and goes upwards of $80.00 per square foot!
Countertop materials vary immensely in cost as well with quartz coming in at $50.00-$150.00 or more per square foot and granite or marble costing $40.00-$100.00 or more per square foot. One important thing to note here is that you will have additional square footage costs associated with labor or installation, read on below.
Over-communication with your home design or remodel team is imperative to sticking within your budget. As mentioned above, you are not just paying for materials and cost of goods. You may also have to pay for labor, installation, project management or interior design. Depending on the scope of the project, typical labor costs for counter installs are $25.00-$50.00 or more per square foot. Floor and tile labor ranges from $4.00-$10.00 and up per square foot. Project management usually comes in around $100-200 per hour with interior design services in the same price range.
Establishing an overall aesthetic is key to designing any room and a powder room is no exception. Work with your designer to select a design style to focus on and keep this in mind as you pick out necessary pieces and elements for your half-bath. Knowing the theme of any space in advance will also help you adhere to a budget. A modern glamour inspired design complete with gemstone tile and an elaborate vanity may be a higher price point than a more minimalist vision.
Prioritizing the design style will allow you to create a realistic budget, while also achieving a cohesive space and welcoming environment for guests. Don’t forget to travel outside of your comfort zone; these powder room spaces are the perfect opportunity to be bold and daring.
As you know, great design is always about the details! Powder rooms have more design freedom than your average bath because they do not have humidity issues caused by showers and bathtubs. Bold saturated colors, vivid wallcoverings, and elaborate lighting can all be used to elevate the space.
Lighting is also of utmost importance in a small space. Often a powder room will not have natural light, making it key to include the proper amount of illumination and wattage for the space. Overhead fittings alone may not be enough. Adding vanity lighting on a dimmer will allow you to create a “mood” or ambiance” in the space, while also giving the ability to create the most flattering light for your guests.
Other luxury details, such as heated floors and high end fixtures should also be taken into consideration when creating a budget.
Overall, powder rooms are a favorite of ours to design. The limited area is a welcomed challenge and allows for big design ideas. With careful planning and budgeting, this pint sized space can be one of the most provocative in your home.
